Created the role of Drosselmeyer in Christopher Hampson’s Nutcracker
Repertoire included
Title roles in Grigorovich’s Spartacus, Ivan the Terrible and Romeo & Juliet and created the leading role of Boris in Grigorovich’s The Golden Age, he danced Jean de Brienne in Raymonda and Basilio in Don Quixote having toured with The Bolshoi extensively around the world. In 1990 Irek joined The Royal Ballet where Kenneth MacMillan created Winter Dreams and The Judas Tree for him. His partnership with Viviana Durante became legendary in such roles such as Crown Prince Rudolf in Mayerling and Des Grieux/Lescaut in Manon. He danced Solor in Makarova’s Bayadère as well as other works by Ashton; Balanchine; Bintley; Fokine; Nijinska; Page and Tuckett. He created the title role in Twyla Tharp’s Mr Worldly Wise

Irek is married to former Bolshoi ballerina Maria Zubkova and they have two children.
He was awarded an OBE in 2000
